Mass Distribution and Bulge Formation in the Milky Way Galaxy

چکیده

In its first part, this paper summarizes recent work on the mass and shape of the Galactic dark halo. The second part presents a review of the large-scale structure of the Milky Way, and of the evidence that the inner Galaxy is dominated by baryonic matter. This is briefly compared with the predictions of ΛCDM and MOND. Finally, a summary is given of bulge formation from clumpy, gas-rich disks, a process which may give rise to old, disk-like, α-rich bulges similar to the Galactic bulge.

The Maximum Optical Depth Towards Bulge Stars From Axisymmetric Models of the Milky Way

It has been known that recent microlensing results towards the bulge imply mass densities that are surprisingly high given dynamical constraints on the Milky Way mass distribution. We derive the maximum optical depth towards the bulge that may be generated by axisymmetric structures in the Milky Way, and show that observations are close to surpassing these limits. This result argues in favor of...

Large-Scale Model of the Milky Way: Stellar Kinematics and Microlensing Event Timescale Distribution in the Galactic Bulge

We build a stellar-dynamical model of the Milky Way barred bulge and disk, using a newly implemented adaptive particle method. The underlying mass model has been previously shown to match the Galactic near-infrared surface brightness as well as gas-kinematic observations. Here we show that the new stellar-dynamical model also matches the observed stellar kinematics in several bulge fields, and ...

On the Origin of Exponential Galaxy Disks

One of the most important unresolved issues for galaxy formation theory is to understand the origin of exponential galaxy disks. We use a disk galaxy evolution model to investigate whether galaxies with exponential surface brightness profiles can be produced in a cosmologically motivated framework for disk galaxy formation. Our model follows the accretion, cooling, and ejection of baryonic mass...

Chemical Evolution of the Galactic Disk and Bulge

(i) When was the Galaxy assembled? Is this an ongoing process? What was the merging history of the Milky Way? (ii) When did star formation occur in what is now ‘The Milky Way Galaxy’? Where did the star formation occur then? What was the stellar Initial Mass Function? (iii) How much dissipation of energy was there before and during the formation of the different stellar components of the Galaxy...

Testing the universal stellar IMF on the metallicity distribution in the bulges of the Milky Way and M 31

Aims. We test whether the universal initial mass function (UIMF) or the integrated galaxial IMF (IGIMF) can be employed to explain the metallicity distribution (MD) of giants in the Galactic bulge. Methods. We make use of a single-zone chemical evolution model developed for the Milky Way bulge in the context of an inside-out model for the formation of the Galaxy. We checked whether it is possib...
